In the last two days, I had to run 2 work errands, that required me to alter my
normal schedule. I wanted to make an early morning visit at one of our warehouses,
near the Los Angeles International Airport.
I had to leave the office and take the 101 Freeway to the 405 Freeway, in the morning
commute hours. Today, I had to go to the office and then to a court hearing in Van Nuys,
also in the morning commute hours.
So many times, as a business person, we are often asked to rate how our company operates
on a daily basis and how we function as a company, in this economy and in this wide world of ours.
Many people are down on government, since they feel that the reason government is there is to
provide for the people and to improve the quality of life for its citizens. It is similar in a private
business, in that we try to provide the best products and services we can to each and every customer we get a chance to work with. We look at all customer interactions as a chance to not only satisfy their needs, but to make them better and more informed so that they will understand we are there for them and their needs.
Obviously, this is a missing component for the public, when it comes to the actions of our government, as it is clear, government only works for those who can leverage it. The large political donors, which is fine if you happen to be in this privileged class of maybe 1% of the people.
For the rest of us, is it not clear that traffic, notwithstanding how many dollars we throw at the overall problem, with fuel, excise, development and general use taxes all contributing to a huge
failure. Is traffic not a result of government's failure to adequately administer it?
How much more do we pay to be late or not to have parking--but they always have efficient meter maids to hammer the middle class--of to have to waste more of our time on their failure
to plan, and execute maintained roads, safe freeways and an efficient use of these resources.
I know I am not the first person to discuss this analogy, but maybe if we treated every elected and employed government person, and told them they could be fired if their customers or constituents were upset at the poor quality of how government does such a lousy job overall,
maybe there would be a change in how things go.....It is nice to dream
However, I say this cause yesterday I had to put an employee on probation for saying something
about a client-no matter if it was true or not-since he spoke out of turn and it got back to our client. There was not a bad intent, just a bad result, and in business, you have to fight for what you want and this is one big reason, that government results, generally come in less than expected, as their people care more about their pensions and free medical, than they do their customers, us, the public.
There are a lot of reasons for this, but in times when people are hurting and feeling vulnerable in this economy, maybe they should understand that it is hard to see people keeping a job and not doing a good job and only complaining about it. I mean, I passed three ill conceived DWP work crews on the way back to the office. They had 6 people on the scene, with the normal 2 people mildly working and 4 watching, pretending not to look at the people stuck in traffic while they pretend to be working.
